The $500 Cardboard Box

This has to be one of the oddest and unimaginable gifts you could give anyone, but if you know a child that has everything, here is something you can almost be assured that they do not have. Yes, you did read the headline correctly: it is a $500 cardboard box.$500 Cardboard BoxAccording to the Bawx website, this idea was spawned from one simple observation: Children of a certain age would rather play with a large cardboard box than the product that came inside of it. Although the most expensive box is $499, they do offer lower-priced “models” at $24.99, $49.99 and $99.99. All of the boxes, or "models" if you will, come with the same dimensions (24” x 24” x 24”) and are made in the United States from 100% recycled products. One important spec that is not provided is the strength of the box, and there are few additional specs that would be helpful in understanding the actual durability of the Bawx:

  • Number of walls with which the box is constructed. Common cardboard boxes are typically constructed using a single, double, or triple wall.
  • The Mullen Burst Test: This test measures the burst strength of the box walls. The most common strength is 200 lbs. per square inch.
  • The Edge Crush Test: This test measures the stacking strength of the linerboard.

Not to leave you thinking that this is the most absurd product you have ever seen, there is a nice "catch". All of the proceeds from the sale of these boxes will go to benefit a children’s charity endorsed by the website (The Charley Davidson Leukemia Fund and the Blue Sky Bridge),  " you can feel really good about buying BAWX, even if it is just a box.”
